Finnish Refugee Council’s panel discussion on functional adult literacy in the European Humanitarian Forum

Finnish Refugee Council participated in the European Humanitarian Forum, which took place in Brussels from Monday 21 to Wednesday 23 March 2022, in a hybrid format. The Humanitarian Forum was organised by the European Commission and France in the framework of its Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

In the event FRC organized a discussion session, which focused on the crucial role of Functional Adult Literacy, “FAL”, i.e., the ability to apply the skills of reading, writing and written calculations to the requirements of daily life – in refugee setting to bestow a wide range of benefits upon individuals, their families and communities. The positive impact of different thematic and operational approaches were explored, from life skills to women empowerment, from financial literacy to host country language skills to facilitate refugees’ integration. Speakers at FRC’s session were Erdem Vardar (Founding Director, YUVA), Paula Malan (Senior Education Advisor, Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland), Marjaana Sall (Ambassador for Education, Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland) Peter Paul Opata (Program Manager, FRC Uganda) and Katja Mannerstöm (Head of Public Affairs, FRC).
